GPC, or Global Privacy Control, is a mechanism for consumers to tell websites to respect their privacy rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), and legislations in other jurisdictions. If GPC is turned on and the site recognizes the signal, the visitor is automatically opted out of targeted advertising and anything that could be considered “selling” their personal information.
To enable GPC signal, consumers download a browser or extension that supports the signal. Similar to managing an ad-block extension, consumers can turn on the GPC signal for all websites they visit. If a website supports recognizing GPC, then it can register the browser request to Opt Out of Selling or Sharing Personal Info.
To check if GPC is enabled for your browser, simply go to https://globalprivacycontrol.org/. The site will check if the GPC signal is detected or not.
GPC recognition using Cookie Consent Manager allows TrustArc’s customers to recognize GPC signal set on the consumers’ browsers and set appropriate cookie settings on their browsers automatically.
To recognize GPC on a website using Cookie Consent Manager (CCM), TrustArc’s customers must turn on the GPC (Global Privacy Control) Consent feature on the Configure Consent Manager page. It detects and honors the browser’s signal for Global Privacy Control, which automatically opts users out of cookie categorizations in consent managers.
To enable the GPC (Global Privacy Control) feature, follow these steps:

From the Cookie Consent Manager platform navigation panel, select Scans and Consent.

Select a cookie consent manager to update or click the Edit icon.

In the Configure Consent Manager page, select the Integrate Cookie Consent Manager with your site's tag management system to control the setting of cookies checkbox.

Follow the instructions to Add New Location Settings in the Location Settings or you may also select a consent experience to edit by clicking the Edit icon.

In the Add/Update Location Setting window, specify the Default Consent. By default, this is set to All No, which automatically opts users out in all categories. You can change the setting to All Deselected, All Yes, or Custom Selection.
When the All Deselected option is selected, there will be no toggle options pre-selected in the Overlay Panel, except for Required Category as it has a fixed "ACTIVE" toggle meaning it always opts in.
When the Custom Selection option is selected, the user can customize the GPC and/or DNT settings to the required cookie categorizations that their business needs. The user will be able to customize the toggle selection of "Yes or No" based on their preferences, except for Required Category as it has a fixed "ACTIVE" toggle meaning it always opts in.

Apply & Ignore Previous Consents - When this GPC Consent option and the GPC browser signal are enabled, the system will execute the GPC flow when there is no existing consent.
- When users visit without consent, GPC consent will be applied.
- When users visit with consent, the GPC will be ignored.

Apply & Override Previous Consents - When this GPC Consent option and the GPC browser signal are enabled, the system will execute the GPC flow when GPC has not been honored yet.
- When users visit without consent, GPC consent will be applied.
- When users visit with consent, the system will check if GPC has been honored previously. If not, GPC consent will be applied.

Do Not Apply - When this GPC Consent option is enabled, the system will not execute the GPC flow.
